California's Efforts to Create Active Community Environments
Highlighted In American Journal of Public Health

The California Center for Physical Activity's work at promoting active community environments was highlighted in the September 2003 issue of the American Journal of Public Health for promoting more walkable and bikeable communities in partnership with such organizations as California Walks, California Bicycle Coalition, Local Government Commission, and California/Western Regional Office, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. International Award for California Active Aging Program

The International Council on Active Aging named the Aging and Independence Services of San Diego County, "Feeling Fit Club" program, one of North America's five most innovative active aging programs in December 2003. Aging and Independence Services of San Diego County also was the recipient of the 2003 Healthcare and Aging Award from the American Society on Aging. For the past five years, Aging and Independence Services of San Diego County has received support from the California Center for Physical Activity's California Active Aging Network Project, utilizing its model to meet local needs. Center Staff Member Receives Prestigious Fellowship

In 2001, Anne Seeley, who oversaw California's efforts to create active community environments, was selected as the first and only professional ever from the field of public health to receive a prestigious Environmental Fellowship from the German Marshall Fund administered by the Center for Clean Air Policy. The fellowship is usually awarded to transportation engineers and land use planners. Ms. Seeley's fellowship allowed her to spend a month in Europe with professionals from diverse disciplines to discover how other countries successfully foster walkable and bikable communities. Her simple dream was to get more people, more physically active, more often. To read an overview of what she learned, click here [PDF].

"Your office has provided training and technical assistance to help county health departments initiate different physical activity-related programs. We wouldn't be where we are at today without your help. You've provided good program models and follow up assistance."
